Château Delmond, Sauternes 2012

Country: France  Region: Bordeaux  Vintage: 2012

Varietal: Riesling  Category: Sweet White  Color: White

Producer: Château Delmond

"In addition to Jean-Christophe's award winning Sauternes from Château Laville, we also carry his second Sauternes label, Château Delmond, which is sourced from younger vines and cooler parts of the vineyard. This gives our customers a lower priced alternative from the same stunning property.

Delmond was the name of his grandfather who originally bought the property. The same amount of care is used to make Delmond with several passes through the vineyards at harvest to pick optimal botrytised berries. ""At least 80% of the blend is made from botrytis affected grapes,"" says Jean-Christophe. The wine is aged in tank for 18 months prior to bottling. The wine is a blend of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc and is aged in tank for 18 months prior to bottling."

Product Features: Sustainable;Vegan;Vegetarian

Product Allergens: Sulphites Label

Winemaker: Jean-Christophe Barbe

Vineyards:

Jean Christophe Barbe's vineyards are located in the commune of Preignac. He has 13 hectares which all qualify for Sauternes status. The average age of the vines is 30 years. Chateau Delmond, however, is made from slightly younger vines, resulting in a fresher, lighter style, yet with the complexity and luscious feel of good Sauternes. Soils are mainly gravel and calcareous gravel.

Vinification:

The grapes were harvested in separate 'passes' through the vineyard and pressed in the pneumatic and vertical hydraulic press. The alcoholic fermentation took place at a temperature of 20-22°C. The wine was aged in tank for 18 months prior to bottling and because it was so clean, he bottled with a relatively low level of free SO2 (40 mg/litre).

Tasting Notes:

Pale gold in colour with fresh floral and stone fruit aromas on the nose. Apricot, honey and peach mix with citrus peel and creamy flavours on the palate. Medium to full in body with refreshing acidity to balance the lingering sweet finish.

Food Suggestion: Lovely with crème brûlée, tiramisu or, of course, a perfect match with Roquefort.

Closure: Natural Cork  ABV:13.5%  Acidity [g/l]: 5.7  Classification: AOC
