Killowen Rum & Raisin Single Malt Cask Strength
Killowen is one of the smallest Irish distilleries, located in the Mourne Mountains of County Down. Despite its small stature, the artisanal methods of bonding, blending, and distilling have amassed a huge following of enthusiasts known as the Killowen Kult.
This Single Malt Irish Whiskey is finished in dark rum casks & PX Sherry butts, and bottled at 55%, balancing PX Sherry & rum finishes for the perfect flavour of the Caribbean.
After aging for 5 years in Bourbon casks, this Single Malt has been divided and finished in Killowen’s own dark rum casks & PX sherry butts. The County Louth malt is the perfect compliment to the marriage of PX sherry flavours of prunes, figs & raisins combined with rum’s tropical Caribbean notes of coconut & vanilla.
Tasting Notes:
This whiskey is both complex and very well balanced. The combination of rum and PX sherry cask finishing brings layers of scents on the nose and flavours to the palate. Figs, vanilla, and coconut are detectable on the nose but nothing dominates. It is a rather unique nose attributable to the unusual finishing. The palate also exhibits the balanced flavour profile. Those familiar with PX sherry finishes would expect a sweet, syrupy element but this is muted by the rum influence. Coconut flavours are definitely evident along with vanilla notes from the bourbon cask maturation.
